In 2003 the GIS Consortium embarked on its first web based mapping application - MapOffice(TM).  This product has had considerable success and opened the development platform of the GIS Consortium to the web.  It is anticipated that this trend will continue and web based mapping and information queries will continue to grow.

The GIS Consortium aligns very well with the centralized trends of the information technology industry.  In addition to having standard data models and production efficiencies, the organization increases member buying power by seemlessly integrating information across multiple organizations.

As part of its charter, the GIS Consortium avoids buying and maintaining specialized hardware, network, and peripherals required for web mapping.  Instead, it put the onus on the private sector to provide these capabilities and leverages the size of the Consortium to increase buying power.
